Lianshulu Lodge under new Ownership

Lianshulu Lodge is open again under new ownership and management.

The ownership consists of Dutch nationals Alexander Van Heeren and Peter Van Langeveldt as well as Dusty Rodgers who is well known in the Namibian Tourism & Hospitality Industry and Reinhardt Küsters, a local shipping entrepreneur.
Lianshulu Lodges which includes Lianshulu Main Lodge and Lianshulu Bush Lodge on an 800 ha private concession in the Mudumu National Park along the Kwando River as well as Matota Island Lodge, situated on the Mudumu National Park cut line inside the Bayelerwa Conservancy in the Eastern Caprivi Strip of Namibia, will be incorporated into a fully fledged marketing & management company known as The Caprivi Collection with central reservations and marketing based in Swakopmund under the management of Anette Küsters who too is no stranger to the travel and airline industry in Namibia.

The company has already embarked on extensive renovations and refurbishments of the properties and Lianshulu Main Lodge is now open for bookings with the remaining two properties opening on a gradual phase-in as business demands this.

Five Flowers for a 'green' Roadhouse

For its eco-friendly management the Cañon Roadhouse was rewarded by Eco Awards Namibia with five desert flowers (highest ranking). Cañon Lodge and Namib Desert Lodge were awarded three desert flowers each. Decisive factors were the water recycling plants (for the gardens), the eco-friendly waste disposal and the Gondwana Eco Competition at their lodges and on the web.

Exploring Damaraland on foot

Two diverse new hiking trails at Damara Mopane Lodge offer guests the opportunity to explore the flora and fauna of Damaraland at their leisure. The Mountain Top Route (4 km) requires some climbing to reach a hilltop in the vicinity of the lodge. By contrast, the Valley Walking Trail is a leisurely 4-km-walk through diverse vegetation such as Mopane forest, grassy plains and thickets of Trumpet Thorn.

The Quiver Tree - a Victim of Climate Change?

Red alert for the quiver tree was declared at the climate conference in Copenhagen in January 2010. Aloe Dichotoma and nine other plant and animal species were added to the 'Red List'. There was indeed reason for concern: In many places in southern Namibia entire groups of quiver trees were dying while hardly any young trees were discovered. Climate change was seen as the main suspect.

We received news that foot and mouth has become a problem again for the December season in the Caprivi area. Please see the information received from the Ministry of Agriculture, Water & Forestry:

MOVEMENT OF ANIMALS/PRODUCTS AND INFECTIOUS THINGS THROUGH VETERINARY ROAD BLOCKS, CAPRIVI.

1. The following animals/infectious things may not under any circumstances be allowed to pass through the road blocks from any infected area:

· All cloven hoofed animals (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and game.)

· Raw red meat

· Raw milk

· Grass, hay, straw, reeds, Lucerne

· Manure

· Hides and skins and second hand jute bags

· Bone, bone meal , carcass meal and blood meal

· Large quantities of firewood i.e., vehicle load

· Sour milk

· Other products that might pose a risk – contact State Veterinarian.

2. The following may cross the road block from an infected area:

· Dogs and cats

· Horses, donkeys and mules

· Live or frozen poultry and birds, feathers, eggs and raw meat of poultry and birds

· Fish, reptiles, frogs, worms

· Vegetables, fruit, wild, free from manure or blood

· Leafy vegetables such as cabbages, spinach, lettuce, celery, etc., if free from manure or blood.

· Butter, margarine, cheese in original container/package

· Sealed containers of pasteurized milk

Edelweiss arrives in Cape Town

Swiss airline, Edelweiss Air, arrived on its maiden flight from Zurich to Cape Town at 20h25 on October 25 with over 150 passengers on board and departed again for Zurich at 22h25 with about 50 passengers. The airline, using an Airbus A330-200, is scheduled to fly non-stop twice a week between Cape Town and Zürich on Tuesdays and Fridays.
From November 1 flights will arrive at 21h45 and depart at 23h25.“Edelweiss Air is the second airline to join the Cape Town International Airport family this year, following Zambezi Airlines, which started operating from Cape Town in June this year. Now Zambezi Airlines flies to the city three times a week. We are also looking forward to Air France launching its non-stop flight between Cape Town and Paris-Charles de Gaulle with three weekly frequencies and British Airways is set to introduce double-daily flights to Cape Town at the end of the month.
This is all positive news for the airport and Cape Town and certainly a testament to what we have to offer as a region in tourism and business,” said Deborah Francis, Acting Communications Manager.

Robertson Wine on the River set for October

From October 14 to 16, the Robertson Wine on the River will be held on the banks of the Breede River for the sixth consecutive year. Visitors will be able to enjoy over 300 wines from various wineries, browse through the food stalls, and listen to live jazz, ballads, and blues.

The festival will take place in a marquee at riverside farm Goudmyn, situated on the R317 between Robertson and Bonnievale. Features will include tutored chardonnay tastings at the Chardonnay Tent, the Robertson Farmers’ Market, river cruises, and an arts and crafts selection.

There will also be a range of children’s activities. Children under 18 will enter free of charge, after which the activities will be charged for on a pay-as-you-go system.

Designated parking areas have been arranged and, for visitors who use parking areas further away, a shuttle service will provide transport to and from the festival.

Wilderness has announced that Kulala Wilderness Camp will close permanently on 15.04.2012. After Kulala Wilderness Camp has closed, future Wilderness accommodation in the Sossusvlei area will be provided by Kulala Desert Lodge and Little Kulala.

Destination: the Sperrgebiet, tourism's rough diamond
In 1908, when diamonds were discovered by railway worker Zacharias Lewala in the vicinity of Lüderitz, the German colonial administration quickly declared a restricted zone, the 'Sperrgebiet'. For a long time, the only sign welcoming travellers read 'keep out'. Today, all that is changing, as parts of the restricted area have been opened for the adventurous. The Sperrgebiet is a rugged, closed area, that can only be visited with a permit that must be applied for two weeks in advance. No children under 14 can enter the Sperrgebiet. Kolmanskop, although treated separately, also falls within the Sperrgebiet. The attraction of the area lies in its history, it’s marvellous natural attractions and the sense of illicit pleasure that comes from visiting a forbidden zone. The trip to Lüderitz, from where the Sperrgebiet is entered, is difficult to schedule as the distances are long, and the route in and out between Lüderitz and Aus must be repeated. However, if the traveller is pressed for time, a fly-in is recommended.

Nature: the amazing plants of the Sperrgebiet
A large part of the Sperrgebiet consists of the Succulent Karoo Biome, a global diversity hotspot. Spreading from Aus, across the border of the Sperrgebiet, this environment is an under-marketed attraction that gives consultants an interesting alternative for clients with an interest in botany, succulent plants and deserts.

Air Namibia upgrades regional fleet

Air Namibia has announced an upgrade of its regional fleet by adding two new-generation A319-100 aircraft, scheduled to enter service this month.

The A319-100 will be in a two-class configuration, with 16 business-class and 96 economy-class seats. The new aircraft offers a 137cm seat pitch in business class and 81cm pitch in economy class. The aircraft will service the Windhoek, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Luanda and Accra routes.

Nkasa Lupala Tented Lodge

When is a good time to come to Namibia?

Unlike many other African countries, Namibia is an all year destination. The dry season is best for game viewing whereas the wetter (green) season is better for scenery, bird watching and general photography.

January, February, March & April:
Wildlife and game viewing:
Animals, especially in Etosha, tend to spread out and not gather at the waterholes. However, this does not mean that one does not see animals. Many of the plains game like springbok and zebra, give birth during this time so lots of young to be seen. Animals like the lions, leopard and others stay in their territories and do not move away.
Desert and landscapes:
This period is the best time to visit the Namib Desert with its green grasses, open and clear skies with some beautiful cloud formations.
Photography:
This is an excellent time in the desert for landscapes, beautiful colours as well as ethnic people.

May, June, July & August:
Wildlife and game viewing:
Water levels are dropping and animals start congregating at waterholes for their daily drink. Still quite a lot of vegetation so animals are a quite spread out. A good time for game viewing.
Desert and landscapes:
Autumn and winter means cool and chilly evenings bringing crisp conditions, clear skies and pristine dunes and landscapes.
Photography:
Fantastic months for photography. Landscapes, dune formations etc are at their best with little dust in the air giving clear and open skies.

September, October, November & December:
Wildlife and game viewing:
This period can get very hot indeed which makes for excellent game viewing … again, a wide range of animals meeting at the waterholes. This is often during the heat of the day so good game viewing throughout the day. In the north of Namibia, the rains can start as early as December but game viewing is normally still excellent.
Desert and landscapes:
All year destination but can get extremely hot from about 11h00 to 16h00.
Photography:
Photography in Namibia is always good … game in Etosha, dunes at Sossusvlei, landscapes and ethnic people. Middle of the day and early afternoon is hot and the light would not be that good.

Then there is the interesting history that Frikkie will tell you about the area. Visit the old lime oven close to the lodge, as well as the very interesting lithoparium. On the topics of the lithops the lodge has introduced a new activity for guests (only self-drive at this point) interested in these plants: We have over 20 locations from Lüderitz to Helmeringhausen and around the Canyon Lodge, where Lithops and other succulents grow in nature. To enable the guests to find the succulents we normally accompany them to the locations, where the plants are growing. The reason for this is that we are assisting the guests to find the plants, explaining names etc and ensure that the sites are properly preserved. Frans Indongo Lodge: boasts with another rhino calf born this year, and this brings the rhino population to 7 White and 2 Black Rhinos. One of the lodges' preferred partners for activities in the Otjiwarongo area is the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF).

Gelbingen Lodge: offers a great Himba experience especially for self-drive clients, who do not want to drive all the way up to Opuwo. Immanuel, who is one of the Himba of the village living at Gelbingen, guides you through his home and tells you all about their life and customs.

Guestfarm Kiripotib: This quaint guest farm is the ideal spot for guests interested in arts & crafts. The carpet weavery on site produces magnificent karakul wool carpets in all forms, colours and designs. You can create your own design right there and then. Also visit Claudia's gold smith studio, where she creates beautiful jewellery. It is also a "mecca" for astrologers with state of the art equipment that is available.

Lüderitz Nest Hotel: The project of refurbishing the rooms is still ongoing, and they really do look very stunning. The public areas are all done.

Sandwich Harbour 4x4: "The Kuiseb River is still flooded after the exceptional rains this year. The entire Kuiseb Delta is still mostly under water and the we cannot pass through this area at all. We are still able to get along the edges of the delta where we can find Dune Larks and most other desert species. The salt mining company is busy with draining the water into the sea.

Naude found a big male warthog running around in the middle of the salt pans. He probably came down along the river and lost his direction after the strong east winds. We have recently added two Nissan Patrols to our fleet to cope with increasing demand for the Sandwich Harbour Excursions in season. We will continue to keep our groups as small and personal as possible."

Toshari Lodge: A curio shop and 3 additional Luxury Rooms were added to the lodge's facilities. An outside barbecue area enables the lodge to offer barbecue and carvery buffet on alternating nights. All building operations are completed.

Zelda Game & Guestfarm: The gardens at the entrance area have been completely revamped and now feature a waterfall and some small fountains. It invites you to stroll around and sit in the quiet nooks of the garden enjoying the tranquil surroundings. They are also busy upgrading the Be Wild Camp and plan to be finished with these at the beginning of 2012.

Nine trained camels are moving to Twyfelfontein area. The scenic area with its historic rock engravings, volcanic and sandstone geology, panoramic vistas, endemic fauna & flora offer guest an ideal opportunity to explore the area on the back of a camel. No fences and unlimited space allow the camels to walk in any direction, leaving a light footprint without any noise or pollution to the environment.

The camels will arrive on the 3rd of August and be based at the Aba-Huab campsite.

A half day excursion on the back of a camel will take guests to various rock engraving sites which are hidden amongst Mopani trees and rock boulders and situated off the beaten track.

The traditional Damara Village not far from the Aba-Huab Campsite makes an easy morning or
afternoon excursion to experience age old Damara customs in a unique setting.

Ride out to "Wondergat" a bottomless sinkhole north from Twyfelfontein Lodge to toss a rock down its mouth without hearing it hit the bottom, and then traverse via a different route back to the lodge while exploring breathtaking Aba-Huab valley vistas.

Guests can participate on a longer camel safari combined with camping under the stars and trekking by day through ephemeral riverbeds of the Huab and Ugab Valley. Itinerary and quote on request.

There was serious damage to some equipment in Francistown which has led to a complete power failure of certain areas. Authorities are predicting 4 days to effect repairs. Then to add to Botswana’s current woe’s the strikes in South Africa are leading to fuel and gas shortages in the country.
Below is an update on conditions at the properties in our portfolio:

Thamalakane River Lodge:
Maun has no power and there is no gas to be found. Lanterns are being used for lighting. Management are in the process of sourcing portable showers for guests and will be heating water with wood fires. They are very low on gas, they are searching further afield for supplies, if they don’t have any luck then meals will be prepared in their pizza oven and on open fires. Thank goodness the pizza’s are exceptional at Thamalakane! Staff at Thamalakane are very experienced and are confident that they will be able to keep guests happy.
Reservations are handled by our offices in Cape Town so communication is all running smoothly as usual in that department.

Dinaka Safari Lodge:
Dinaka is solar powered so it is business as usual at the camp. Reservations are being handled by our offices in Cape Town so communication is all going according to plan.

Nxamaseri Island Lodge:
The power outage is not affecting Nxamaseri. Reservations is running on a battery, so all is well there. Fuel and gas has not affected them yet, they have quite good reserves so all should be good.

Mapula Lodge:
Mapula reservations in Maun is affected, we (Smart Strategies) are able to assist with any booking enquiry as we have access to their systems and we are picking up their reservation emails until the power gets sorted out in Maun. Telephone lines are down and one entire cell network as well. Business as usual at the camp all is running smoothly.

Camp Dizhana:
The camp does not rely on the national power grid, so everything is running as usual. Reservations is run from South Africa so all is fine on that front as well.

Tuli Safari Lodge:
The power outages have not affected them and they are fine with stocks of fuel and gas.

Updated road conditions for the South of Namibia

Please be advised that if you are entering the Canyon area from the north (Luderitz, Keetmanshoop areas) the C12 at Seeheim, leading off the B4 road has been closed due to severe flooding of the road.
We suggest that you rather take the Naute Dam turn off signposted the D545 and drive over the dam wall. The D545 then joins the C12 which will then lead you to the Canyon. The Canon Roadhouse, Canon Village and Canon Lodge are then well signposted off the C12.

It has also been reported that the road (C13) at Rosh Pinah has been washed away and is not accessible, therefore there is no access from Rosh Pinah up to Aus or from Aus to Rosh Pinah.

2011 Health Check a resounding success
Every year the AfriCat Team, including our supporting veterinarian Dr. Mark Jago, undertakes a health check on the resident cheetah, leopard, spotted hyaena & wild dogs at our Carnivore Care Centre based on Okonjima farm. The lions of the AfriCat North Care Centre will undergo a similar health check in June.

In preparation for these examinations, individual animals in the Care Centre are identified according to routine and specific needs which may have arisen such as contraception, eye infections or abnormalities, worn or broken dentition, serious injuries and any other obvious symptoms indicating poor health, observed during our daily rounds.

Yellow Fever vaccination required for passengers travelling to and from Zambia

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has revised the Yellow Fever vaccination recommendations for Africa. The South African Department of Health has subsequently issued a statement that all travellers from South Africa to Zambia and travellers from Zambia to South Africa will now require proof of yellow fever vaccination. Previously, this was not required.
All in-transit passengers between the two destinations, irrespective of the time period in transit, will also require proof of yellow fever vaccination.

In 1960 the world population stood at about 3 billion people. Today there are an estimated 7 billion living on the planet, and by the year 2050, that number is expected to grow to over 9 billion. A tripling of mankind’s number in a little over a single lifetime.

This raises the poignant question: how will the world feed all of these mouths? In the face of man’s need for food where will there be space on this tiny planet for the last few animals to roam as they always have? Where will the elephant live? The lion roar? The cheetah hunt?

Traditionally Namibia has been a land of livestock farmers, however today wildlife utilization has become a viable option for many a Namibian through tourism, hunting and the like. But it comes with a price - human-wildlife conflict - and it is this cost that the AfriCat Foundation has committed itself to tackle.

The AfriCat Foundation started out in 1992 as a small welfare organization when 'Chinga' the Cheetah was bought by the Hanssens at a cattle auction and given a home on Okonjima. Ever since, AfriCat has dedicated its efforts to rescuing carnivores from inhumane conditions, taken care of those too injured to be set free, rehabilitated and released more than 1 000 large carnivores back into the wild.

Fish River Canyon Hiking Trail reopens

The popular Fish River Canyon hiking trail will be reopened effective 3rd June 2011.
The trail had been closed due to flash floods which presented a danger to hikers. The water levels in the canyon have however subsided sufficiently to allow hikers to negotiate the 90 km long African marvel.
Please be aware that the Fish River Canyon is a fragile environment and remains subject to flash floods after an exceptional rainy season.
Visitors to the Fish River Canyon assume all risks while in the canyon and should come prepared with sufficient water.

Increased frequency on Walvis Bay – Cape Town, from 3 flights per week to 6 flights per week. Existing flights operated on B737-500 and the 3 new rotations operated on ERJ 135. Enjoy the Wonders of Nature at Leisure

Guests of Namib Desert Lodge who want to participate in an organized excursion to Sossusvlei have to rise early. Because the colours of the desert are at their most beautiful and resplendent in the first light of the morning. And the ascent to the top of the highest dunes on earth is not quite as taxing in the freshness of the new day. It will definitely rev up the circulation of any morning grouch and the reward is a magnificent view across the dune landscape and Sossusvlei, currently filled with water - which is a very rare sight. Namib Desert Lodge acquired a second all-wheel drive with eight passenger seats this month. This means that the two vehicles can now take a total of 16 guests on a leisurely excursion to Sossusvlei every day. Professional guides provide details on the specific features of the landscape, the fauna and flora.

Gondwana Cañon Park a Garden of Eden

All internal fences have now disappeared in Gondwana Cañon Park. The last section of 15 km of fencing along the public road near Holoog was taken down in January. In total, 500 km of fences have been removed. They were a relic from earlier farming activities. Foraging game needs to be able to move around as freely as possible in order to survive. The park is situated in the Nama Karoo Desert where rainfall usually is scarce and scattered. Since its inception in 1995 only game species which once were indigenous to the region were reintroduced to the 1,260 km² nature conservation area, among them hartebeest, wildebeest and plains zebra. This year, however, game animals find more than enough food almost everywhere. In January 25.1 mm of rain (monthly average 19.9 mm) were recorded and in February 61.5 mm (31.2 mm). All of the park’s seasonal (mostly dry) rivers were in flood at some stage. Everything is sprouting and blooming now, the game is well-fed. In January the park rangers watched a herd of 140 springbok grazing in the grassy plains. The camera traps at Jagpos and Jakkalsdam took pictures of two leopards.

Menu enriched by traditional Speciality

There is a new delicacy on the menu of Damara Mopane Lodge: roasted Mopane worms. They are harvested on site, just like the vegetables, herbs and fruit. The worms, or more correctly caterpillars, are picked from Mopane trees around the lodge. Our guests react differently to this new speciality - which in fact is a traditional, regional one. Some leave it at a curious glance into the bowl, others valiantly reach into it. Mopane worms occur only in southern Africa and are usually unknown to guests from other continents. In its distribution area in Africa the caterpillars are an important source of protein for millions of people. For many it is also a desperately needed source of income.

New service connects CT with Livingstone and Vic Falls

Starting June 30, Zambezi Airlines will introduce new flights connecting Cape Town directly with Livingstone and on to Lusaka. Flights from Cape Town are scheduled to operate on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and will depart at 08h00, arriving in Livingstone at 11h10. Flights will then depart Livingstone at 11h55, arriving in Lusaka at 12h55. The return service will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, departing Lusaka at 12h15, arriving in Livingstone at 13h15. From Livingstone flights will depart at 14h00, arriving in Cape Town at 17h10. Connecting passengers between Lusaka and Cape Town, in both directions, will not be required to disembark in Livingstone and baggage will be tagged through to the final destination. Zambian entry and exit customs and immigration will be cleared in Lusaka. Flights will be operated by a B737-500, configured in 99 economy seats and 12 business-class seats.

KAISOSI RIVER LODGE Chris has advised us that Kaisosi River Lodge is definitely operational. It is only the road leading to Kaisosi, which is under water, and if your clients do not want to drive through, they can leave their vehicle at a secure parking area. The lodge will then pick them up from there. The river is quite high, but lower than last year.

KALAHARI RED DUNES LODGE Even though the lodge is new the owner keeps improving things as feedback comes back from visitors. Currently they are busy building thatched roofs in front of every chalet so that the entrance and the little terrace in front are under shade. Five units will receive air-conditioning for the time being. All chalets will be fitted with fridges, and he is planning to replace the current beds with antiques dating from the German colonial time around 1905. The terrace by the swimming pool and the outside terrace from the restaurant have received more shading as well.

NAMTIB DESERT LODGE Namtib will be closed during the month of June 2011, as from 31 May 2011 up to and including 03 July 2011.

North Namibia in flood

For the third consecutive year, president Hifikepunye Pohamba of Namibia has declared a state of emergency due to heavy rain and subsequent flooding mostly in the northern part of the country. There has been heavy rainfall since January, causing water levels to rise in the Zambezi and Okavango rivers. Around 62 people are reported to have drowned and thousands more are displaced. The government has authorised N$30 million in relief funds to assist residents and for crops and infrastructure that have been destroyed. Local Namibian media are also reporting that a health crisis is looming as 22 clinics are flooded and surrounded by water. To make matter worse, more flooding is still expected from Angola over the next two weeks. The Namibia Tourism Board issued the following statement: “We have not received any formal notifications from any of the stakeholders yet. However, the situation as it looks, is rather serious in the northern part of the country. There are roads that have been totally swept away, however the roads that we are aware of to date,‘do not’ include many of the tourist routes. There are some establishments in the north as well that are reported to be totally inaccessible but again, those are not among the ones that you find in our packages etc. “Overall, our historical and normal routes remain safe to travellers.” Following concerns about rising waters in far northern Namibia and north-eastern Namibia, the individual lodge statuses are as follows:

• Hakusembe River Lodge has reopened with two rooms and the floating chalet but water levels may rise at short notice. Please call to check in advance.

• Impalila Island Lodge - the lodge is operating as normal. The airstrip is closed, and guests are being transferred by boat from Kasane.

• Lianshulu Lodge - the lodge is operating as normal.

• Namushasha Country Lodge - the lodge is operating as normal. Follow the clearly marked detour signs.

• Ndhovu Safari Lodge - the lodge is operating as normal but due to swamping of the access road, guests will be transported from the parking lot to the lodge by boat. The campsite is closed.

• Ntwala Island Lodge - the lodge is operating as normal. The airstrip is closed, and guests are being transferred by boat from Kasane.

• Susuwe Island Lodge - the lodge is operating as normal. 4x4 off-road travel and activities that require 4x4 vehicles may be cancelled, depending on conditions. Guests should be advised to keep to the main highway and other well-travelled routes. Road conditions should be established on departure by asking at reception or by calling the destination ahead.

BüllsPort Guestfarm and Mountain Zebra research

BüllsPort Guestfarm in collaboration with Professor Morris Gosling of the Namibian Nature Foundation, conducts a very interesting Mountain Zebra research in the spectacular Naukluft Mountains. While studying the ecology and behaviour of this wild and ancient species, which is now protected in Namibia, the project aims to discover how many zebras live on the farm. A hidden camera is positioned in the Quiver tree gorge, capturing the movements of the Hartman’s Mountain Zebra. After a year of research a number of 115 individual animals were recorded. Like human fingerprints, all zebra stripe patterns are individually unique so that once an animal is photographed, it can be recognised again. Visitors to the region are asked if they take pictures of Mountain Zebras in the Naukluft Region, to kindly forward photographs and especially good quality side views of animals, with a record of date and location of sightings to Prof Gosling: l.m.gosling@ncl.ac.uk

They are doing all they can to ascertain Hobatere’s future in the tourism industry but it is less than clear at the present time to know what the future decision will be. You have our assurance that as soon as the authorities indicate their intentions in this regard all operators and loyal supporters will be informed immediately.
As their contract to manage and run the concession has not yet been renewed, we hope you will understand that it is impossible for them to guarantee any future reservations. Namibia has been ranked third top tourism destination in sub-Saharan Africa by the 2011 Travel and Tourism Competitive Index, coming ahead of much-popularised exotic countries such as Kenya and Tanzania. Namibia follows South Africa at number two spot with Mauritius toping the list of 30 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Botswana ranks fifth in the regional listing. Namibia ranks 84 in the overall ranking of 139 countries worldwide. Switzerland is at number one in the world, while South Africa and Botswana rank 66 and 91 respectively. The “rich natural resources, fauna and a pristine natural environment” along with prioritised environment sustainability and “well developed ground transport infrastructure,” played in the favour of Namibia.
The World Economic Forum (WEF) released the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report on March 07 at the Global Tourism Forum 2011 in Andorra. Last year’s football world cup contributed to South Africa as a holiday destination as it “reinforced South Africa’s position as a key international tourist destination,” along with “reasonably priced hotel rooms and a favourable tax regime,” says the report. Yet, “safety and security remain serious concerns” and so is the level of health and hygiene with “low physician density and concerns about access to improved sanitation.
Namibia’s western neighbour, Botswana, which ranked fifth in the region scored high for its natural resources, with much nationally protected land area, rich fauna, and a lack of environmental damage. The country also benefits from excellent price competitiveness, with low-ticket taxes and airport charges, a favourable tax regime, and low prices more generally. “In addition, some aspects of the policy environment are supportive of the sector’s development, including well-protected property rights and few visa restrictions,” comments the report.

It’s a verdant Desert
The clay pan of Sossusvlei in the heart of the Namib, surrounded by the highest dunes on earth, has turned into a big lake. A few days ago those who wanted to see this rare spectacle of nature had to walk for 5 km because the seasonal Tsauchab River, which flows into Sossusvlei, had swept away part of the gravel road to the vlei. The eastern fringe of the Namib Desert, which you pass on the way to Sossusvlei, has turned into a vast silvery-green sea of grass. At Namib Desert Lodge, nestled at the foot of the fossilized dunes, a bank of sand had to be heaped up to protect the lodge from flooding.

The Kalahari Desert in eastern Namibia is also decked out in greenery and blooms. The Auob River flooded the depressions near Stampriet and enclosed the rise on which Kalahari Farmhouse is situated. At times guests had to park their cars at the riverbank and climb onto a hanger to be taken through hundreds of metres of shallow water by tractor. At Aus in the south-westerly parts of the country a kayakist used the opportunity for a trip on the seasonal river in flood.
The monthly figures have beaten all records, at least since the time that rainfall results were recorded. Here are this season’s figures (from 1 September 2010):
Etosha Safari Lodge & Camp at Etosha National Park – 274.8 mm (annual average: approx. 300 mm; in February alone: 99.8 mm).
Damara Mopane Lodge near Khorixas - 306 mm (approx. 150 mm / 139.8 mm)
Kalahari Anib Lodge northeast of Mariental – approx. 300 mm (approx. 250 mm / no data available). Kalahari Farmhouse near Stampriet – 275.4 mm (approx. 250 mm / 112.0 mm).
Namib Desert Lodge north of Sossusvlei/Sesriem – 258.6 mm (approx. 100 mm / 160.6 mm).
Cañon Roadhouse east of the Fish River Canyon – 74.7 mm (approx. 80 mm / 64.6 mm).
Klein-Aus Vista near Aus – 103.4 mm (approx. 80 mm / 97.8 mm).

The rainfalls have washed away parts of gravel and tar roads and caused potholes. A roughly 50 metre section of the B 3 main road between Karasburg and Ariamsvlei in the southeast has been eroded. Repairs are expected to take two to three months. In the meantime travellers have to make a detour. Some passes on the escarpment between the central plateau and the coastal plains of the Namib can only be negotiated by four-wheel drive at present.

In Etosha National Park a bus with a tour group got stuck in a waterhole and had to be pulled out. Damara Mopane Lodge near Khorixas had no problems with flooding but there were constant power failures. Guests nevertheless had a pleasant stay thanks to the lodge’s own generator - and candles.

The dams have filled up. The sluice gates of Hardap Dam near Mariental, the country’s largest reservoir, had to be opened several times already to avoid overflowing. Hardap dams up the Fish River which nevertheless flowed in full width several hundred kilometres further south, in the Fish River Canyon. South Africa has also had a lot of rain. When the Gariep/Orange River, which forms Namibia’s southern border, burst its banks several weeks ago lodgings and fields of grapes were flooded, and the ferry service at Sendelingsdrift had to be suspended.

Sossusvlei has Water

The Pictures taken just after the water reached the Sossusvlei, the area known to have some of the worlds highest sand dunes.

The Namib Desert region around Sossusvlei after several years is blessed to have received some good rains. The Tsauchab River has been in flood a few times in the past few days and eventually the water masses made its way through to the end, to Sossusvlei.

Water in the desert is something not often witnessed. The Namib Desert is said to be one of the oldest and driest desert, having endured arid or semi-arid conditions for an estimated 55 to 80 million years. Animals and plants in the Namib rely largely on morning fog as the main source of water. This often referred to as 'mysterious' fog is as a result of the Arctic water meeting African desert; the Atlantic Ocean is a mere 60km east of Sossusvlei.

The ephemeral Tsauchab River, has its origin in the Naukluft Mountains, makes its way through the Sesriem Canyon and then after another 20-30km onwards forming a delta through the sandy stretches towards the Deadvlei and final dune belt of Sossusvlei. The sandy 5km stretch of road from what is known as the 2x4 Parking is flooded and this phenomenon is currently best viewed from the air.

All other roads from elsewhere in the country leading towards the Sossusvlei area seem relatively fine. They are however best travelled in 4x4, or vehicles with high ground clearance. Special care must be taken when approaching rivers and even the smallest rivulets as these may have steep edges due to sudden and have flow of water. Slow driving is definitely recommended.

Impalila refurbishments and Islands in Africa news

The aftermath of the 2010 football World Cup is almost a distant memory yet Islands in Africa is anticipating an exciting year ahead. Already guest enquiries for the Caprivi lodges has sparked renewed interest in the region as world economies find their footing after previous turbulence.

In anticipation of the coming season, renovation is currently underway. Ntwala Island Lodge is undergoing general maintenance, while Impalila Island Lodge is enjoying a facelift with both structural and major soft refurbishment taking place - these improvements include the main lodge facilities as well as the chalets. As a consequence of the work being completed, under supervision of new management, Impalila Island Lodge is at present closed but will reopen in time for Valentine's Day on the 14th February 2011.

Though the Zambezi has begun to rise - as it is wont to do at this time of the year - the quality of the tiger fishing indicates the existing health of the river. In late January, productive angling was enjoyed at the lodges with a trio of specimen "water dogs" exceeding the 8 kg mark being landed.

At Susuwe Island Lodge on the Kwando River, feverish excitement prevailed when guests sighted lion cubs in the company of their parents near Little Serengeti. From the "vocalising" taking place from the males, it seems they are still intent on remaining active within their territory despite the inclement weather patterns. Encouragingly too, leopard sightings are becoming more frequent.

Auob River reaches highest level in more than 10 years

It is still uncertain whether the water will reach the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

The Auob River, one of only two ephemeral rivers flowing through the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, has reached its highest level in more than a decade – but it is still uncertain whether it will reach the park.
The level of the river began rising sharply last weekend at Stampriet, near its source, and reached the settlement of Gochas, 72 km downstream, on Wednesday afternoon.
The General Manager of the Auob Country Lodge, Maureen De Villiers, told Tour Namibia this morning, the river was flowing the full width of its course and the water level was still rising.
De Villiers said the campsite at the lodge was flooded (Wednesday, 26 January) and that the rising level of the river has since forced the lodge to close the campsite. The Lodge however is operational.
She said the level of the Auob was about 1 m below the causeway at Gochas early yesterday evening, but this morning the river was flowing strongly over the causeway – preventing some of the learners at the village from getting to school.
De Villiers expects the river to begin subsiding in about two day’s time.
Meanwhile, Mr Jannie van der Merwe of the farm Kinkel near the Mata Mata border has told Tour Namibia the flood water is not expected to reach the border before Monday – if the flow is strong enough.
The Auob River is a vital component of the Kgalagadi ecosystem as the subterranean water supports a lush growth of Camel Thorn trees. Regular floods are essential to recharge the underground water which is extracted to provide water to the herds of Springbok, Gemsbok (Oryx), Blue Wildebeest and Red Hartebeest occurring along its course.
Water of the Auob River last reached the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in the year 2000. The Auob River eventually joins the Nossob River at Twee Rivieren at the park’s southern entrance.

Please be advised that the road from Mariental to the Intu Afrika Private Game Reserve is flooded.
If you plan to travel in that direction without a 4x4 vehicle, please rather drive via Kalkrand.

The Okavango River has started to rise at an alarming speed. It has already reached much higher levels now than it had the same time last year. The first floodings have been reported along the river and we expect more floods to occur in the coming weeks. Divava Okavango Lodge & Spa is in the fortunate position to be located on higher grounds and they do not experience flooding of the lodge or the access roads. Please continue to travel to the Okavango. The area needs your support and even during the floods the Kavango and Caprivi remain an unbelievable natural spectacle.

Ai-Ais/Richterfeld high flood levels

SANParks has announced the closure of all campsites in the Richtersveld section of the /Ai-/Ais-Richtersveld Transfrontier Park until further notice.
The closure of the campsites has been necessitated by the high level of the Orange River which is expected to rise above its 1988 level of 11 m at Noordoewer when the flood peaks in the Lower Orange River.
SANParks says in a news release the campsites at De Hoop, De Koei, Tatasberg, Richtersberg, Kokerboomkloof, Hakkiesdoring, Potjiespram, as well as at Sendelingsdrift Campsite have been closed. Accommodation in the chalets at Sendelingsdrift will, however, still be available.
The flood has also affected the operations of private accommodation establishments downstream of Noordoewer.
The Namibian Roads Authority has, meanwhile, announced the closure of the DR212 gravel road along the northern bank of the Orange River between Aussenkehr and Sendelingsdrift.
Operations of the pontoon at Sendelingsdrift, which facilitates the flow of traffic between the Richtersveld section of the park and Namibia, have been suspended for more than a week because of the high level of the river and the pontoon is expected to remain close for some time to come.
The Orange River reached a record high of 11.39 m at Noordoewer in 1974 and stood at 7 m in February last year when it reached its highest level in 23 years.

Itinerary:
After landing at Windhoek International Airport you will be transported to Windhoek, Trans Namib/Desert Express. The train leaves Windhoek at 13h00 pm. The Crew will welcome you with a drink and open sandwiches. At 15h30 pm a stop is scheduled at Oropoko Ranch for a Game Drive with all guests for one hour. Thereafter the journey continues to Swakopmund. Dinner will be served on the Train that evening.
After a wholesome breakfast the train will stop at the Dunes between Swakopmund and Walvisbay for a two hour excursion. You will have time available from 10h00 am to 14h30 pm, to do shopping, sightseeing and have a walkabout on the beaches.
At 14h30 pm the train leaves Swakopmund again. You are welcomed back by the Crew with a drink and open sandwiches. A late afternoon Sundowner, Dinner and overnight in the train will be the highlight for the day.
After breakfast the train will stop at Oropoko Ranch for a Lion feed. At 10h30 pm you will arrive back in Windhoek. The shuttle will bring you back to Windhoek International Airport or you could book an additional night or two to enjoy the beautiful city of Windhoek.

Dorob National Park regulations expected to be announced in January 2011

The regulations for the newly proclaimed Dorob National Park are expected to be announced in the first week of January 2011.

Following the park’s proclamation on 1 December 2010, holidaymakers in the former National West Coast Recreation Area (which forms the core of the park) complained bitterly about the enforcement of the regulations – which were never publicized.
The coastal office of the Afrikaans daily, Republikein, reports that the park regulations will differ from those in other conservation areas in the interior. Provision will be made for recreation activities such as walking along the beach and in the Swakop River, as well as the walking of pets in certain areas such as the Swakop River Valley.
According to Republikein most of the problems were reported from Mile 72 where spot fines were issued to visitors who did not pass through the gate of the popular campsite on their way to fishing spots along this stretch of coast. Reports were also received of horse-riders and people walking their dogs in the Swakop River being ordered to leave the area by over-zealous Ministry of Environment and Tourism officials.
The proclamation of the Dorob National Park has also raised questions about the status of the Messum Crater – a popular destination with 4x4 enthusiasts. Republikein’s office at the coast has since established that the inland boundary of the Dorob National Park follows the original boundary of the National West Coast Recreation Area. The boundary cuts through the centre of the crater and the western half of the crater, therefore, now falls in the Dorob National Park.
Off-road enthusiasts are advised to familiarise themselves with the new regulations (when they are made public) – especially with regard to off-road travel.

NWR Gross Barmen Resort closed for redevelopment

The once popular Gross Barmen Resort and Health Spa will be closing its doors for two years while the more than N$285 million re-development phase gives the resort a new look.

Speaking at the official commissioning of the re-development of the resort on behalf of the Minister of Tourism and Environment, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, was Dr. Kalumbi Shangula, Permanent Secretary of Tourism. he said the Gross Barmen resort had reached the end of its lifespan as the needs and requirements of the modern tourist have gradually changed. A direct investment of N$220 million was approved by Government for the new concept and design of Gross Barmen and, in addition, Cabinet approved a further N$65 for the redevelopment of the resort through a Government guarantee for financing at the Development Bank.

The new tourism facilities will consist of the main complex of a hotel with 50 beds, a conference hall with 250 seating capacity, 37 chalets, camping sites, a main spa complex with indoor health spa pools, a wellness section with massage rooms, a restaurant and floating bar and recreation facilities such as a mini-golf course, fully equipped gym facilities, squash and tennis courts and a kiddies playground. The Gross Barmen project will officially be launched into the market in the 2012 tourism season as a complete tourism product and will be a complete independent facility operated as a subsidiary of NWR.

Dorob National Park - Namibia's 8th National Park

The creation of the first mega-park in Namibia is now one step closer, following the proclamation of the Dorob National Park.
The newly proclaimed park incorporates the former National West Coast Recreation Area, which stretches from the Ugab River southwards to just north of Swakopmund, as well as a large swathe of the Namib section of the Namib-Naukluft Park.
The 780 000 ha National West Coast Recreation Area was proclaimed in 1973, but as it did not enjoy the same status as game and national parks little could be done to prevent indiscriminate off-road driving and the control of quad bikes, as well as other conservation regulations.
This area, which is renowned for its excellent fishing, is also an important breeding ground of the Damara tern. It also has several extensive lichen fields such as those at Wlotzkasbaken and northeast of Cape Cross.
Among the areas excluded from the park are the following: the railway line between Arandis, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, the municipal areas of Swakopmund, Walvis Bay and Hentiesbaai, the peri-urban area of Wlotzkasbaken, Cape Cross Lodge, the Cape Cross Seal Reserve, proclaimed roads and several farms in the Swakop River.
The Dorob National Park borders in the south on the Namib-Naukluft Park which in turn is bounded by the Sperrgebiet National Park. North of the Ugab River, the Dorob National Park borders on the Skeleton Coast Park which is to become a transfrontier park with the Ioana National Park in Angola in terms of a memorandum of understanding signed between the governments of Namibia and Angola in 2003.
The establishment of the Dorob National Park on 1 December 2010 is the final piece of the puzzle which will enable Namibia’s conservation authorities to proclaim a mega-park, provisionally named the Namib Skeleton Coast National Park (NSCNP). It will stretch between the Orange River and the Kunene River and will also adjoin the IAi-IAis/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park (between Namibia and South Africa) in the south.
The 10.754 million hectare mega-park will be the 6th largest terrestrial park in the world and the largest in Africa.

Developments and updates from Namibia Country Lodges

Developments in Khaudum:
The long-awaited developments in Khaudum National Park are in the final planning stages. The Khaudum North Complex consists of three Conservancies with whom NCL has a Joint Venture. The focus is to promote Tourism and create much needed employment within the Conservancies and to protect one of Namibia last wilderness areas. Renovation work on both existing campsites should kick off at the start of February 2011. The aim is to keep the nine campsites rustic to blend in with the natural wilderness area but to provide communal ablution facilities with hot and cold running water and flush toilets. Each site will have its own "braai" area and grid with a water point. Bonus - no electricity for the true nature lover!

Estimated completion is about end of April, weather permitting and provided the elephants don't pop in for a look and disrupt the work.
The second phase will be construction of both Sikereti and Khaudum luxury bush camps.
Both camps will have eight en-suite tented units on decks and one central main area.
The date of completion is difficult to estimate considering the challenging environment of the Khaudum, building logistics and strict environmental guidelines we need to adhere to while building.

News from Kalizo Lodge

This year for us at kalizo went from one extreme to the other with the worst flood we have ever experienced which closed kalizo for 2 months to the best period we have had with wonderful business starting with the Soccer World Cup right through to the new year of 2010.

Kalizo is looking really great with lots of renovations and alterations being done this year. We can now accommodate 6 more people in self catering making a total of 24 people in self catering.

The Fishing was really good this year as well.

Kalizo is now in a conservancy area, which extends from Kalimbeza to Milindi which is fantastic, as we now have a guard at the carmine – bee – eaters. We had a Film crew from Japan who filmed the carmines as well. We are now going to be part of the Kaza, (5 countries,) which will be the largest Conversation area in the World, which will be a benefit to all of us, bringing a large amount of game into our areas.
Kalizo river frontage has been increased by 360meters, and in this area we will be putting in a new Camp site and additional self catering houses.

Val was elected Personality of the Year for the Namibian Hospitality Industry (HAN) for her contribution in promoting the Caprivi Region. They said that Val had worked tirelessly (often against all odds) to promote not only the Caprivi region but Namibia as a whole.

For all those that know the Caprivi, it is a long journey to get here, but once you are here we have excellent game parks in the Caprivi Region and on the border the one of the best game parks in Southern Africa – Chobe National Park. We are also only 250km from Victoria Falls (One of the 7 great wonders of the world.)

LÜDERITZ NEST HOTEL:
There are so many interesting old and new things to do in Lüderitz. Beside the very interesting city tours on offer, there is the new Oyster Farm and Bar, which is well worth a visit. A selection of boat cruises are also on offer from a sailing boat to a catamaran, also catering for bigger groups. These boat cruises are very exclusive and interesting since
there are many small islands that one passes by during the trip. Of course you will see dolphins and other marine life, but no other place in Namibia will you be able to see the Jackass Penguins.
The opening of the Sperrgebiet road is no longer a distant dream, but will be reality in the near future. This again opens up a whole new route in southern Namibia.

Our wildlife is growing at Rostock Ritz and Kücki reported on 4 November that a new baby Oryx was born and spotted during the scenic drive. Julia was at the lodge on 1st and 2nd November and spotted Springbuck, Oryx, Kudus, Ostrich, Jackal and ample
of Zebra during the scenic drive.
With a bit of luck when one stays up a little later at the restaurant, you might see the jackal that comes for his daily evening visit onto the terrace.

Refurbishment notice for Kempinski Mokuti Lodge

Please be informed that Kempinski Mokuti Lodge will start the refurbishment on 98 guest rooms at Kempinski Mokuti Lodge as of the 28.11.10.

The Lodge will not close down for the time of the renovation works and all bookings will be honoured and are confirmed as by their reservations department.

The refurbishment will run next to the normal operations and will have minimal impact on the every day operation. The Lodge is very wide spread and though it is possible to take complete room blocks out of operation, thus guests will hardly notice that work on the rooms are done.

During the Low Season Phase (December 2010 to end February 2011) they will work on 30 rooms at a time and these new rooms will be available as of February/March. From March onwards they will renovate only 10 rooms at a time and as soon as each room block is finished, these rooms will be integrated into operations again and the next 10 rooms will be worked on. The room blocks, which is being worked on will be fenced off, so hardly any construction work is visible for guests. All rooms will be fully refurbished by October 2011.

They will renovate all rooms of the Deluxe, Safari Club and Safari Suite category.

Ombalantu Baobab recommended as National Heritage Site

The famous Ombalatu Baobab is Outapi has been recommended for proclamation as a national heritage place by the National Heritage Council of Namibia.

The landmark Baobab tree, locally known as Omukwa wa Nakafingo na Temba, is estimated to be between 700 and 800 years old and has a height of about 20 m. The branches of the ancient tree provided an ideal vantage point and served as a lookout post in days gone by.

The cavernous trunk served as a sanctuary to the Aambalantu people fleeing attackers and was also used as a storage place. It was put to use of a post office in 1940 and later became the centrepiece of a base of the South African military. A stone pulpit and benches are reminders of its use as a chapel during this period. An opening of about 1 m high by 2 m wide provides access to the hollow trunk which can accommodate about 20 people.

The large Baobab is the focal point of the Ombalantu Baobab Tree Heritage Centre in Outapi.
Submissions and requests for hearings by members of the public on the recommended proclamation of the Ombalantu Baobab must be submitted to the National Heritage Council of Namibia before Monday, 29 November.
Other well-known baobabs in North-Central Namibia include King Nashilongo’s Baobab which served as the king’s office in Tsandi. Sir Howard’s Baobab, also in Tsandi, was named after the first Administrator of South West Africa, Sir Howard Gorges, who visited the area in June 1916.

Also recommended for proclamation as a national heritage place is the Okahao Baobab - an infamous tree during the years of the liberation struggle.
The Ombalantu Baobab is not the first baobab in the country to be declared a national monument. That honour goes to the baobab on the farm Keibib, north of Grootfontein. At the time of its proclamation in 1951, it was the largest known Baobab in Namibia’s commercial farming area.

New facilities at Fish River Canyon Main View Point

Namibia’s Environment and Tourism Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah will officially open the new Fish River Canyon viewpoint on Thursday, 21 October.

The facilities at the Main Viewpoint overlooking the Fish River Canyon were upgraded by the Strengthening the Protected Area Network (SPAN) in teams of an agreement between the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

The upgrade includes a raised viewing platform built from local stone, shaded tables and benches where visitors can sit, environmentally friendly toilets and displays on various aspects of the canyon which ranks amongst the largest in the world.

The Fish River Canyon is the main attraction of the Ai-Ais Hot Springs Park and is the largest source of park entry fees to the Ministry after the Etosha National Park and the Namib-Naukluft Park – with an annual income of N$5 million (US$734 000 at current exchange rate) per year.

The Ai-Ais Hot Springs Park forms part of the /Ai-/Ais/-Richtersveld Transfrontier Park (ARTP) was established in terms of a treaty signed by the Namibian President and his South African counterpart in 2003. Two-thirds of the park are in Namibia, while the remaining third enjoys the protection of the Richtersveld National Park in South Africa.

The opening of the new facilities will also be attended by South Africa’s Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Buyelwa Sonjica, the United Nations Development Programme Resident Representative in Namibia, Kari Egge, and Karas Region Governor Dawid Boois.
